Music Performance : Simon Thierrée

A dance and live music performance by Mohamed “Ben Fury” Benaji and Simon Thierrée. The dancer touches here the crossing of tradition and modernity through the exploration of the Middle-East Dabkeh, which he makes his using his background as a breakdancer and contemporary dance performer. The performers invite the audience in a circle where different cultures meet, in a gentle wish for openness and brotherhood recovery between people.
The show was created in march 2016 in Brussels and it performed in many different dance festival and places such as Fari Foni Waati (Bamako), Festival On Marche(Marrakech), Vilnius Dance Festival, Festival de Marseille, Nuit Blanche (Brussels). The artists are willing to rework the show in order to lengthen it to a 45 mn experience, and they plan some touring in the Middle-East and Africa.

About The Music :

The music is performed live by Simon Thierrée on violin and pedals. The journey of the music is the canva of the whole performance. It begins with a classical, mysterious though solemn opening, transforming slowly to a maqam scale, the shifts to the rhythmical taqtoqa jebelia, growing in a trance-feeling round; then, a persistent kick takes over everything and the sound gets to something between trap and dubstep. Voices appear in the end, both performers singing a line known in the whole arab world, from the 70’s very famous and revendicative band Jil Jilala: Fin radi biya khoya. Where are you taking me, my brother?
